Yi Jing, Oracle of the Moon

What does it mean when a line is 'moving'?

When a part of a situation is more or less at its end, or at an impasse, or difficult to solve or in need of advice, the line is indicated as old yang or yin.

'Old' means that it is at its top, the utmost it can reach. Like a wave one second before it topples and goes down again. Or midsummer, summer at its height.

Things cannot stay at that utmost point, because universe does not allow standstill. They have to go down. Or at their lowest point, they will go up again. Or - they have to change even more drastically, causing this situation to turn into another one.

Above is the Taiyi symbol in the cycle of the year. Summer solstice is the top of the white part, top of yang. Strong yang but also yang at its end. An old yang or old yin line means, that things are on the verge of changing.

The moment when something has to be done, or will happen by itself, but also the moment with the highest potential to make a change in the direction you need. Old yang: time to stop, renew or change an action. Old yin: new beginnings or possibilities.

Old yang is a time for decisions.
Old yin is a time for new inspiration.
