Hexagram 38

Looking askance

Looking askance: small matters are auspicious

The great image says:
above is the fire, below is the marsh, askance
The noble one is similar and yet different

day 6 of a yin moon

Gui is the hexagram of ‘the others’, which may be people, or gods and spirits. On Gui-day the oracle was consulted, and everyone was apprehensive about what would be. A good or bad harvest, an angry ancestor when one has done something wrong or forgot an offering. Many had reason for 'opposition eyes'. But it means also the unknown others one stares at, those one feels different from, or simply are not oneself: standing face to face with you, talking or silent, nice or unfriendly.
More about 37 and 38

GUI3: The character consists of an offering mat for oblations (2) and two eyes (1). The offering mat is a cyclical character: the one that indicates yin water (bringing oblations?). The day of gui was the day when the prognostications were made for the next period of 10 days, and it was a kind of Sunday, no hard labor or expeditions and such.
GUI3: diverging, extraordinary, to part, to separate, unusual, strange, to squint, to stare at. With sun instead of eyes: in opposition (like sun and moon at full moon). So with eyes it is like ‘opposition-eyes’.

6 at 3: Seeing the cart dragged, one's oxen pulled, one's people with bent head and cut off nose. Without a beginning, there is an end.
All people are different. One can make an issue of it, a straight discussion, and in the end someone will be injured. One can make a lighthearted repartee and it will be a mutual pleasure. The same starting point, but the outcome depends on the road one chooses, the road of being put in the right or the road of interesting exchange.

Above 9: Looking askance, alone. Seeing a pig with mud on its back, a cart loaded with ghosts. At first he draws his bow, later he relaxes his bow. No bandit, a marital suitor. Proceeding encountering rain: as a rule auspicious.
Make your looks and actions comprehensible for other people. If they have to guess about you or your aims, they might guess wrong and shoot. Never expect them to accept you just like that, give them reason to trust you. Show your intentions. A meeting is always tense until each knows the other, then comes relief.

9 at 2: Meeting the master in an alley. Without fault.
Live YOUR life, not A life, adapting to the commonly accepted way of life and its rules. For you only your own rules - or universal rules - are valid. It is a huge compliment to be called weird, it proves your individuality. You have to play your own role, so go ahead.
(Changes to hex.21)

6 at 5: Regrets go away. Their ancestor bites through the skin. Proceed, carry the fault.
Often it is scary to take the first step towards people. Most people don’t even conceive the idea
, they see differences as obstacles instead of appreciating them.  Once the contact has been made, the reward is usually great. But the greatest profit is having the guts to do it. These guts will shape your entire life differently, because everybody is always waiting for the one who initiates the contact.
(Changes to hex.10)

Initial 9 : Regrets go away. Lost horse, do not chase it, it returns by itself. Seeing evil people, without fault.
Many situations can be solved by waiting instead of action, often even especially then. Do what you want to do, but refrain from reacting. It is not you, who reacts, it is the situation causing you to. And if you suspect someone of doing harm to you, then wait with action until you have real proof. Then you act according to reality, instead of reacting to emotions.

9 at 4: Askance, alone. Meeting an eminent man. Communication inspiring confidence. Danger. Without fault.
Learn to be alone. As long as loneliness is a problem, one embraces the first best person without seeing his negative sides, and the problem will only become bigger. A need is a bad guide in life. If you are aware of it and make a conscious choice, then it is not wrong.

Image: 'Different' or separate (a man wearing a scary mask).
Line 3. 'Bent head' is a character which resembles tian, 'heaven' very much. Here 'heaven' is usually translated with 'tattood forehead' or a similar meaning, but in this case I substituted the character, because it makes sense.
lines 4 and 6: the character translated as 'alone' can also mean 'above average', 'excelling'
