Hexagram 35

Jìn, The Gift

Gua Poem: Progress (advance). The marquis of Kang benefits of a gift of horses to breed a multitude, mating them three times a day.

The great image says: Brightness comes up above the earth, progress. The noble one displays his bright character himself.

Xián: the ideogram and the story (NEW). What does it mean for your question?
This hexagram is complementary to hex.5. In 35 one picks up everything one can make use of, 5 is about waiting, but as a verb, actively waiting for what one needs. Don't neglect the other side when you concentrate on one of the two, they need each other.

Top 9: Advancing with horns is connected to attacking cities. Danger, auspicious. Without fault. Divination: distress.
If you want to achieve something big, you have to go for it with all your power. To put thinking, common sense or fears on the backburner, and like they did in old times: to bring your soldiers into a fighting frenzy, so they forget about their own safety. Like a (battering) ram, fighting with horns instead of brains.

6 at 5: Regrets go away. Losing, gaining, no regrets. To proceed is auspicious. Nothing that does not bear fruit.
One grows from the things that come and go, not from the things one holds on to. Money has to roll, insights, ideas, lessons have to roll too. Life is only alive as long as it is moving. Who holds on to his securities cannot grow.
(Changes to hex.12)  Mirror

9 at 4: Advancing like a five-skills rat. Divination: danger.
Knowing a lot of things, but all just a little. Doing many things but not finishing one. Then there will never be any advance. Everything – a thing, a relation, your life – needs completion. A half-built house is no house, a half-lived life is no life.
Harmen about the rat/squirrel/mole-cricket
(Changes to hex.23)   Mirror

6 at 3: All consent. Regrets disappear.
The positivism in one's own heart is the condition for prosperity. Things, animals, people, heaven, they all love the one who has good fortune living in his heart, and they all will cooperate. One's own good luck creates good luck.
(Changes to hex.56)  Mirror

6 at 2: Then advancing, then anxious. Divination: auspicious. Receiving this upright blessing from one's ancestress.
Don’t rush ahead but take all the precautions necessary. Listen to feelings, intuition, premonitions. Advancing is often not so much a matter of using your mind and feet but of trusting your inner wisdom.
(Changes to hex.64)  Mirror

Initial 6: Then advancing, then arrested. Divination: auspicious. Be a net, be true. To be rich: no fault.
Prosperity and affluence do not happen just like that, they have to be captured step by step. One needs perseverance and nerve, because time and again one will have to overcome resistance. Not one step can one get for free. A prefixed course will not get you anywhere worthwhile, so be like a net, fishing up anything you can use, and be true, so you get where you belong, where your Dao tries to get you.
(Changes to hex.21)  Mirror

No lines changing: you can try to do things, but they may fail or even backfire. If there's nothing that should (or can) be done, then this might be a good time to relax and refuel. The Poem and the Image are guides that show you the best way to do that.

The Trigrams offer possibilities that the hexagram-texts don't show.
