Hexagram 03

Zhūn

The spark of life

Sprouting: Eminent - expansion. Harvest - determination
No benefit to proceed probing
Harvest: to install feudal lords

The great image says:
 Clouds and thunder: sprouting
The noble one unravels the warp

Water
Thunder

day 1 of a yang moon (new moon)

A seed sleeps, but when the moisture of the earth awakens it, it has a power to grow which can even split rocks. The power of life.
Nobody can say exactly what the spark of life is, but everybody knows it. One feels it inside and one sees it on the outside. If it is bright, life is full and easy, if it is dim, everything in life is dim too.
It is the inborn vitality which makes things live and grow. Give beings, things or actions all they need for a strong and healthy life. Then their own vitality will sprout and they will grow into their fullest potential.

Everything starts small, from a seed.

Zhun1 is a picture of a sprouting seedling. 1: Two other forms of the same character.
ZHUN1 : to sprout, difficult, obstacle, hard and stingy. TUN2: pair of shoulder blades, one of a pair. Greatly, humble, perfect, generous, well-to-do (the meanings have to do with the pair of shoulder blades: both or all, no exception)
TUN2: accumulate, to bring together soldiers, to station (an army), to stockpile, village; visible, to be there.
Interchangeable with chun1: spring, vitality. Later it was also used instead of chun2 (idem + radical silk) ‘pure, faultless’, because this character was taboo being an emperor’s name. Harmen about Zhun.

6 at 3: Approaching the deer without a guide, it only enters deep into the forest. The noble one knows the signs, so stops. To proceed brings distress
Who charges at things without thinking will put them to flight. A lot of fuss only makes the goal recede. One has to know the home of the game as if one lives there oneself.

(Changes to hex.63)

Above 6: Then driving a team of horses, then tears and blood keep streaming.
The inner core must be resistant against failure. Many things in life will not succeed, so don't depend on success, and don't be a victim of failure. The two go together, if you defeat one, you defeat both.
(Changes to hex.42)
6 at 2: Then sprouting, then proceeding with difficulty, then driving a team of horses. No bandit: a marital suitor. Girls determination: no babies. Ten years, then babies.
Don't just be a reaction on what comes up to you: running when all seems easy, and frustrated by the first obstacle. Things cannot be accomplished just like that, they need time and thought. So don't rush, but don't let anything stop you either.
(Changes to hex.60)

9 at 5: Sprouting one's juice. Small determination auspicious. Big determination pitfall
The mind needs ideas, feats, accomplishments or exchange in order to make its energies sprout. If an old man has friends or gets admiration, he will live twice as long. If someone sees what you accomplished, you get the energy for more. So find others who see.
(Changes to hex.24)
Initial 9 : Turning round and round. Harvest: a settling determination. Harvest: to install feudal lords.
Nothing starts out of nowhere, but the art is to make it become real, to make things emerge from the endless ocean of unrealized potentials. What you do is more important than what you can, because only what you do becomes real. Once you start with doing, your capacities will join in by themselves.
(Changes to hex.8)

6 at 4: Like driving a team of horses proposing marriage. To proceed is auspicious. There will be harvest.
If you want something, then go for it! Put your heart and soul into it. Its success depends on your motivation, dedication, all the powers you yourself put into it. And if that helps your cause, then make a big show of it.
(Changes to hex.17)

Line 2. I owe the marital suitor to Bradford Hatcher (see 'sources'-books).

The first line of hex.1 talks about the dragon under water. This hexagram is that dragon, on the point of emerging. The character can also be used for 'spring', vitality, sensuality, youth. The trigrams are Thunder - the voice and the vital force of the dragon - under Water.
There is an old Chinese song, the 'murmuring dragon' (thunder in the waters), it talks about the beginning of spring, when winter is not really gone yet.
